The last lantern

All the towns pretty lanterns have gone now, replaced by LEDs in a stick. Caught this last one this morning; will report back tonight on the new ones after dark.

In the meantime, friends to lunch - Richard and Allison and McDo. (Melon and tomato in vinaigrette, coronation chicken with walnuts, Cheddar cheese! -All that was in the house, left from English visitors-  and pompette, apple puff delight bought by the guests)

Its still a little bit too warm but we soldier on.

Mixed news.

Yesterday, to Quillan for essentials; specifically a new toilet seat, after many years of  continuous service by the old one.

Dropped in on the English Library there, which was a delight! Interesting people talking interesting stuff.

Here is the Captain enjoying breakfast at the Pink Palace, next to the library - warm to hot days, hardly anyone around, calm and pleasant.

Some bad news though. Two of our old friends are in hospital - one in intensive care in Carcassonne (more on her later when I've ascertained if she wants to be blogged) and another in recovery after an op. The latter is Ole-Bendik who managed to be under his disability scooter when it fell. He's now looking at weeks of rehab and will be moved to Limoux when possible.

Where he will no doubt be cherished :)

Bath Boy grows

Here's Etienne; now nearly as big as the bath he was born in. He claims not to remember a thing about it but there were many adults who have vivid memories to share.
And Alicia, chatting with Tango - when they left us to go back to America they couldn't handle the kid and the parrot, so I got the bird.

The family have gone now, left us before dawn to get to Barcelona for the next stage of their European tour. Miss them, all over again.

Below is the newly-awarded permanent market site of our Charlotte! The market admin like her, her home-baked produce and her commitment so she has won a coveted space. Just behind the tree from the Bank of Spain and the mother-and-baby shop. Perfect for Sunday tea -

Tonight is the LAST NIGHT MARKET of the year. See y'all there, perhaps.

much sociability

By sheer good luck, Annie and Pete are at their Mill when Ryan and Alicia are here, which caused much celebration. A lunch in the shade, to be exact. Then at Etiennes insistence we had dinner at the Argentinian restaurant - so we were happily ensconced in their plastic shed when the storm broke.

The party continued at Toutla, but Bob and I had quit before then.

And this morning, early, David and Celia left for the long drive to Switzerland. We have the remaining family for another day.

Brothers forever

Alicia (here with Armand Roulin) and Celia are coping with the boys exchange of stories and a lifetimes experiences- it is wonderful fun!!
We ate together at home last night since it seems the excesses of the night before left something of a mark. No stamina, these young people.

the eyes have it

Even without the DNA test, we'd have clocked that these two are related. Was very privileged to be present last night, when Ryan met his half-brother David for the first time - will pose some better photos anon.

We naturally gyrated to La Chapaire and were charmed by the stories and the histories that flowed as two families were united.

David and Celia live in Basel and drove down to Esperaza to meet Ryan, Alicia and Etienne (curiously Peggy also lives there - her who was here last week with Arno -and she drove back in the Morgan, her gift from Phil) (small world)

an evening to remember, for sure...

Phils legacy

Poor snap of Peggy and her husband Arno, here from Switzerland to collect Peggys legacy from Phil, of blessed memory; his Morgan. We apero'd at Toutla and lunched at ours yesterday - forgot proper photos - and they drive off today.

Phil would be so happy! Wouldn't be at all surprised to discover him haunting the car, with joy. He adored Peggy, his niece by a previous marriage, and we've all taken to her too. Come back soon :) You are our legacy from Phil xxx

Weather and other activities

Gloriously cool - some say cold - with light drizzle. Last night the glitterati of Espe sat outside Tout-la in the rain. Since Le Healthy and La Chapaire were closed for the long weekend holiday, we (Pete, Clare, Di, Terry - ) stayed put and ate deep fried food. Jean-Luc has taken to calling white wine with lots of ice le piscine blanc which is rather a good name for it; its been thoroughly tested and approved.

Not sure what would be open this morning, it being the feast day of the Assumption (when we celebrate the carrying-up to heaven of the virgin Mary) but the market was there and it was business as usual everywhere in Esperaza. So glad I went to check!! The birds of Rue Gambetta were either taking showers or preparing for the off - fantastic flights of swifts and martins, all plump with mosquitos and ready to fly to Africa and do their bit there.  Hoping they won't be leaving us just yet but the locals think the change in the weather will see them on their way.

Other news, which I was too slow to photograph, is that the kingfisher is back, further down river from where his habitat was destroyed last year - lets hope the authorities will give him/her time to train a brood before ripping everything up again.

And behold!! Not only do we have toilets but we can be seen to have toilets!!

Here's a sign on the old bridge.

goings and goings

Here's James, grown from the charming baby of yesteryear to, erm, something else.... and his folks, Lou and Andy - all well, they appear to be enjoying the heat though will be returning to their new life in Blighty soon.

Bob and I have old mates a bit of a drive away and we went a-visiting. Here is Bob under the trees after dinner and below him, the view on waking. Gorgeous.

Safely back home - the parrots are OK and the frog seems happy.
S/He is changing very fast; bigger than when s/he arrived and the markings have become creamier with ripples of bronze on thigh and belly. Daily more beautiful. I do hope s/he stays with us, the previous frog who was bejewelled with colour either went off to find classier mates or attracted the attention of the garden snake.

New dining table and Esperaza shock horror catastrophe

With great joy we initiated our new dining table last night - inherited from Phil who inherited in his turn from his and Bobs grandfather. Its a solid oak piece that I actually polished before the meal, which was shared with Roland and Katerina and Fran and Clare. Forgot photos. Too busy: own version of coquilles st Jacques, ratatouille, tuna in parcels of pastry with aioli, peach cobbler.  We have to thank Kat and Ro for installing the excellent oven without which the table would be bare. Shiny, but bare.

But far more important news in Esperaza. Shock!! Horror!!

This is pasted on Serrano's window, Serrano's being our very own award winning bakery. Much loved, prized, admired... a lynch-pin in all our festivities. A rough translation: To all our clients... it is 24 years since we arrived in Esperaza. You adopted us and accompanied us in all these years. Thank you for your fidelity, your kindness and your generosity. We have shared in your marriages, baptisms, birthdays - always with pleasure and hopefully to your satisfaction. Thanks again. A little of Esperaza stays in our heart.
Reads like a suicide note! There is another note though, that says the bakery re-opens on Saturday the 10th with new proprietors. But the Serrano family will be missed, for sure. They arrived here shortly after I did and at that time there were three bakeries in town. I would get black bread from one, baguette from another, cake from the third. I guess we have cars and out-of-town shopping to thank for this new paucity.
Keep using the 8a8 folks!! And the markets - keep shopping local - or go and live on a motorway.

More news: Caroze is preparing for her show at Rennes le Chateau (15 - 19 Aug) and will be briefly appearing at Alet soon- most exciting. Here's her studio this morning...

Glorious!! Jem O'Carroll is showing his intense little enamels at RlC also - both artists unusual and interesting and well worth checking out.

Tibetan farewell feast

Sad little image as the Harris tribe leave us....  safe journey and come back soon!! We ate last night with the Tibetans in Quillan and enjoyed it hugely :) Here are Charlie and William; I junked the photos of the adults, we are just not photogenic enough.

market and info

Rubbish, I know; lots going on, forgotten to post, no idea what's happening. Some family still here, such a delight - they cook, they clean, they help out!! And they are entertaining :) |Life made much more pleasant by a breeze and a drop in temperatures, so all well.

Here are snaps from todays market... the rarely-spotted Dermot and Kate, en forme within the meaning of the phrase - and in general. Many old mates out and about, I'm slow off the mark with the camera.

Packed but engaging!
The 10th Festival International de Film Insolite is happening at Rennes le Chateau from 15th - 19th August and Caroze is exhibiting there, see http://caroze-vanderpoll.net  - check it out at https://festivalfilminsoliterenneslechateau.fr
