Energetique

Slightly surprised to see Paul Eluard quoted on a random door but guessing it has something to do with the Festival Arts Energetiques here, where the woke go to buy crystals. See

The market was less packed than usual, perhaps on account of the major rise in Covid-19 cases announced in France -- though we in the Aude seem to be (mysteriously) clear.

I had a great early-morning rummage in the fripperie with New Kelly who is inspirational re; clothes. Here she is, forever out-of-focus...

Later in the evening bumped into Susan who produced a bottle of rose in need of drinking - so I forgot to photograph her but shes looking very well.

Also forgot to snap our Gracie who came round with our new friend Robin.

Here is Esperazas heron, before the sun got going.

Saturday Night Japes

Clare and Fran took pity on our isolatedness and invited us to dinner... blessings on them, wonderful night.

We apero'd outside in fleeting sunshine then ate on the terrace under cover - so when the rain came we could enjoy its freshness and the sound of the patterings.

By the time Fran said we should have photographed the first course, it was too late - we'd eaten it. A plate (beautifully arranged, Fran) of prawns and garlic comfit and olives and salad and gherkin and anchovies and cucumber and sundried tomatoes - memorable even without the snap. Boeuf Bourguignon and Quinoa next and  voila! Tarte Tartine. Accompanied by the music of the weather and the conversation of friends catching up.

This morning is grey and dampish. Yet to find out what the market is doing. Better get going - see you there, maybe!

Changing...

Here is this mornings' view on the way to breakfast (at the Pont with Steve and Leslie, very nice too) See how low the river is and how misty the day.... and now it is raining, such a blessed relief. Surprising that we are not all dancing naked in the streets.

more mask and hospital news

Saw this mask being worn in the 8 a 8 and was allowed to snap it - it was given to the masked lady by her niece -

and below is the house of Gert and Elsbeth... missing you guys :(

Yesterday was salutary. Began with brother-in-law Phil still being poorly and with a list of symptoms worthy of an emergency visit to docs. Got on the phone and learnt that the Centre de Sante was fully booked and wasn't taking new patients and anyway, go away. Very startling as it's just round the corner and has always been helpful. Waited for the pharmacy to open - at 8.30 am - and dived in there. They looked up the number for the Centre de Sante at Couiza, bless 'em. It was the wrong number but easily corrected by the lady at Couiza Town Hall whose number it actually was.

Appointment made with Dr Lemarque for 11.00.

Bob drove us there and sat in the car while I assumed the translators hat. Turned out the good doctor can speak beautiful English, though he didn't want to; we only found out when he sniggered at some English remark we made. He diagnosed kidney stones plus infection and sent us off to the Clinique Montreal in Carcassonne as an emergency.

At the emergency department they took Phils mobile off him and whisked him away.

Bob sat in the car and I sat in the waiting room. For four hours. The wait was enlivened by two little boys aged four and six, whose mother, carried in on a stretcher, was having an abscess dealt with. They were with their grandmother who had no experience of children and resorted to her rosary - the alternative to pulling their hair, it seemed. All most peculiar. I don't like children per se but found myself identifying with them - we drew and played word games ('Moi j'espionne avec mon petit oeil'; they didn't get it though they laughed a lot) The family lived in Bordeaux and were on holiday in Carcassonne. Due to the mothers excruciating pain had done no sightseeing so far.

How we all cheered when she walked out of the emergency ward!

When Phil also tottered out later with a doctor in tow, the news was hardly shattering. He's got kidney stones and an infection. Also he got a sizable prescription. And instructions to get it dealt with on his return to Perfidious Albion.

He feels fine today after a good nights sleep. Started the course of antibiotics. More anon, no doubt.

Very hot again today. Not budging.

Comings and goings and night market

The night market - and here are Phil and Jackie, who will be missed. They leave today -?tomorrow - having sold their amazing house (ex-Frank and Lizzies place) It used to be part of a hat factory and is both original and comfortable and I envy the new owners (French) ( though we have quite enough property, I hear you cry)

And behold, the blur! New Kelly back in town and muttering dark things about never going back.

A decent crowd of ex-pats were out but many others missing. About a third of the tables were empty. The band were good and the food yummy, duck and bacon burger for me, licorice and caramel sheep ice cream to follow.

Only fly in the ointment was that Phil isn't en forme - he's taken to his bed and missed the evening completely. BTW he tested negative for Covid 19 before coming here...

suspended sofa

The ingenious Roland has created a seat over Kats courtyard which we christened last night... perfect, a spot to enjoy with fledglings and plants all around. Wishing them continuing happiness :)

-and here is this morning sunrise chasing away the clouds. It's hot already here which bodes well for tonights market; what to wear???

quietness

Here are two brothers yesterday, watching the removal men removing Angelas stuff.. and today, a subdued market. Police insisting on masks.

Sun breaking through now. All will be well for tomorrows night market, the only social life most of us have nowadays. Sigh.

Fat Smile

This is the quietest summer we have had in the 22 years of being here.

Lizzie Jackson overnighted - our first visitor since before lockdown. Then Phil, one of Bobs brothers, arrived here for a while. And then Angela arrived! We lunched at the creperie, outside and round the back of the dinosaur museum.

Angela has now left, seen here at Carcassonne station beginning the long voyage to quarantine.

Since she has not been able to visit through out the covid crisis  she has decided to leave our little house and remove herself and belongings to London. Am amazing bunch of happenstances has resulted in finding two luton trucks heading there tomorrow.... if all goes well, her possessions will be in them.

No other visitors in sight for a long time. Weird and sad but really easy on the laundry!

Finding we were in Caca to take Angela to the station and at lunchtime, well --- fave gross out Wok Land beckoned. It would have been rude not to respond. No oysters today but plenty of other treats. (fat smile)

Visitors

Lizzie Jackson is here, a treat; she only lives in St Hilare when shes in France but if there is a change she stays over for a decent catch-up. Angela has also arrived - and evaded my camera - so we had the pleasure of introducing the two.

Below is a random snap from the night market featuring Lizzie, Jamsie, Susan and Sheila - as you can see, masking and social distancing was observed, ahem. The local police did patrol the perimeter and no-one was allowed in without a mask which at least showed willing.

If you live in Esperaza you can still get masks from the town hall - just pop in and ask, though if they don't know you  show them a household bill. And sign a book.

Phil, Bobs younger brother, is on his way - expected today or tomorrow. He is driving from  the midlands in a 2CV called Rachel. He may well need to rest up when he arrives - I'm off to make a bed up :)

Aude Sunday

Gave lunch yesterday to Richard and Alison and regret the lack of evidence - forgot photos - gave them a tagine and salad, cheese and plumb crisp with many wines. It was good and wonderful to catch up with them and the news of their kids. Known them all forever and now find that Richard has become German, one of his sons is French and another Australian. Is this usual among our friends as the Brexit boat continues to sink?

Todays open studio got snapped though...

Very lively couple of hours - thanks all for coming :)

Bob took me to lunch at the new creperie afterwards. Nightingale was back in harness with two others... Kevin was turning people away by the time we left, a full house and a packed terrace. Saw Georges, our ex-mayor, en route - begged him to come back. He too is distressed at seeing four years work overturned.

The only other news I missed though being at the Atelier Ouverte.. . it seems there were a group of malcontents in the market complaining about the wearing of masks. Since they were watched by the police and since the police are empowered to impose fines from tomorrow, when mask wearing everywhere is obligatory, we await developments!

goodbye to an era

Here are Andy and Louise who are emptying their palace in readiness for new owners. They will keep a house here so they will not be abandoning us totally - very sentimental about the loss of their old place though, or at least I am. Andy arrived here in Esperaza a few months after me so we go back a long time and that house has many many happy memories.

Saw a stunning meteorite from my bedroom window a couple of nights ago so got dressed to go out and look at the stars. Which is how I discovered that the new mayor is keeping the street lights on all night. Disastrous for the star-struck.

Diary date; Atelier Ouverte on Sunday, 10 - 12, at the garage next to La Casa. Masks obligatory. Want to see my new work out of the actual studio. All welcome!

Esperaza Arts Centre

Kat sent over these photos of  the new Arts Centre - many studios and some apartments, ready for rent. Full disabled access. Exhibition space. Cheap (don't think prices are fixed yet but the town hall are anxious to see it being used so get in there fast)

Said goodbye to dear Bruno yesterday - will miss his erudition.

Mondays party

It being Monday, the night market was the days' highlight; since there had been a brief but welcome storm beforehand, the field under the trees where revelry normally takes place was deemed too muddy for the event. Alors; the car park was promptly pressed into service. It was fine but obviously not as nice as usual - also a little bit crowded, all pretense at social distancing abandoned.

My photos are terrible, even by my standards. This is a direct result of drinking chilled rose as if it were water. Note to self; drink large glass of water with each glass of wine next time.

The other highlight yesterday was  lunch with Kelly, whom we have not seen since the beginning of the lockdown. She is gloriously well!

Slightly disturbed this morning by news from my neighbour,  (=here on holiday from the Cote d'Azure). He said that in the early hours, 2.30, his dog started barking and he saw a flashlight moving down the impasse, held by someone trying the doors and windows.  Since there are a lot of strangers in town, it behoves us all to remember to close things up at night.

Hoping for another storm here. Too hot!

August 10, 2020

Photocopiers available for all -

-including the 'virus is our friend' folk, sigh. This explains why I was stopped in the market and told that masks were not obligatory and why I had to explain, carefully, that in my case they were.

Hot here; waiting on the promised storms.

Saturday au Aude

Last night was spent in a car park near Gracies place, where an enterprising person has opened a little restaurant called the Sunshine Ganguette. Open till the end of September and a pleasure - tables under apple trees - crepes and wine, all good. Above are Gracie, Bruno and Bob-

and introducing Gracies brother David, here on a quick visit from sea management. The only man I've met - to my knowledge - who has pictures of sea slugs on his mobile.

(there would be a photo here but this new blogger makes shifting stuff impossible - hate these changes, anyone know how we can return to old format????)

Below is Lucy, also visiting our Gracie - and below again, Bruno - who spent the day with us. We lunched at the creperie on tables outside by the dinosaur museum. There was a pleasant breeze which died down later, leaving us all baking hot.

Driving home was exciting. Just outside Esperaza at about 10.30, we were pulled by the police who had Bob blow into a breath tester. Most disappointing for them... the most alcohol Bob has drunk in two decades was an ill-advised rhum baba three years ago.

esperaza masks

Spotted in the 8a8 - a neighbour in her glamorous mask, which she made herself.

It's mega hot in Esperaza.

(And I hate the new blogger format, this small post has taken hours to get done. And it ain't posted yet...)

Susan came yesterday and installed my birthday portrait which I totally love and may - soon - post a picture of, but for the moment it is for visitors only.

So far; Louise, Kat and Norbert are witnesses.

You are welcome to drop in :)

Week so far...

On Tuesday I forgot the camera so the apero and dinner at the chateau of St Ferriol that Jamsie gave Susan, Bob et moi rest unrecorded. Except in memory. Guilhem claimed to have done all the cooking and all the pre-cooking; well done that boy :)

Back in Esperaza, Gracie bought this little chap to see us and frighten the parrots - Rico fluffed up his feathers and growled at him, heaven knows where he learnt that trick -

Thence to another chateau, St Julia le Bec - here we are at trough with Rushton and Clare under a plane tree in the walled garden, congratulating ourselves on our life-choices.

Kariokimoules

Last nights night market was distinguished by the entertainment being karaoke and very entertaining it was too - and by the fact that the moules frites man wasn't there, throwing 'my' table into a spiral of chaos and despair.
The evening was further enriched by live projections of the evening between performers - so you could watch yourself watching yourself. No doubt the Japanese have a word for it.

We have a letter from Joan Terrell-Smith, who left Esperaza for America many years ago and is still missed. She writes;

On my third year battling pancreatic cancer. Battling is a bit of an overstatement. I just sit in a chair and let the good nurses poison me. Hair growing back, but now time for another round in the midst of this ghastly Trump PLAGUE (S). Working on the election from what I laughingly call home. Looking good unless he demolishes the post office as he's trying to do to prevent mail voting.

She adds that she is still missing the Aude - and a deal else, still writes a good letter :)

unkempt

Sunday, though a usual frisky market day, was mercifully overcast and the temp dropped 10 degrees or so - phew. Walked up to the garden at Mont Marot. It needs attention but the view remains.

l'Artcolabe vernissage

Last nights' vernisage at Quillan was a species of triumph - the arts association hosted a show of the work of Christophe Souques. Soulage-black with fine Klee/Miro-like gold drawing in a unique vision of the end-of-days. Delicate but strong work. Will return.
The artist loved this photo of Cleopatra, Ole-Bendicks familiar, so enthusiastically that it was conceivable that the proverbial was being taken... then the reference to the little lions of the paintings became clear :)

Here is the inside from out - featuring mine and Kats' refelections -
-and the street party - lots of distancing whilst able to catch up with the riff-raff of artists hereabouts :)

Today is Sunday and breakfast with Claudine. Possibly the first of a new series of photos of masks.
