Big sadness

So sad... Bella and her husband and their friend have been killed by a dog. At least, they've been chased and had their heads ripped off which apparently is the M.O. of an uncontrolled dog - which had to leap two large fences to get to them.

Bob found ther remains this morning and is very upset, of  course. Its one thing loosing them to the golden eagle - quite another to know that some out-of-control dog just  casually destroyed them.
We've had them since eggs so very attached to them and their ways. Despite the fact that Ive eaten chicken twice this week, feel very diminished. Will miss them.

The other flock, with four hens and 2 cocks, dosent seem at all perturbed.

  1. So farewell then Bella, first and last of the Vandellas, she'd have been 6 years old. Co-incubatee of St.Gomez, father of subsequent flocks.

The blue-flecked white hen was the last of Big Red's harem (he was nice), thus 5.

Carlos, with his cartoon city-scape crest, was a year younger, raised on the hill and rewarded for his goodness with the riverside shed gig. His twin was swapped for four bales of hay with an award-winning cartoonist, two of which are still owed.

    The flock lives on ...

  3. Cousin of still-there top-lad Buddy, I think. A son of whose green-egg-laying and co-hill evacuee auntie are prolonging the brood nearby with a new harem where the first lot came from, if you follow me.

  4. Alecia writes; did some research and the likely culprit is either a weasel or an owl. Their calling card is just taking the head. Dogs will generally leave the head and the feet. Plus there is no way that a dog can get in there, let alone get out again. Just keep the other flock locked in at night, because it will be back.
